Swedish Tomtar Gnome - Clay and Wool Figurine

This little whimsical Scandinavian Gnome Tomtar is handmade by me in my studio. His body, boots, and green pants are hand sculpted from polymer clay. His nose has been dusted with pan pastel to give that rosy glow. His boots have been waxed and polished with Renaissance Wax. His hair is made from 100% Red Wool Roving. His hat is made from 100% bright yellow felt with a 100% cotton band woven by me on a sami heddle.

A tomte is a humanoid mythical creature of Scandinavian folklore. The tomte or nisse was believed to take care of a farmer's home and children and protect them from misfortune, in particular at night, when the housefolk were asleep. The Swedish name tomte is derived from a place of residence: the house lot or tomt. The tomte/nisse was often imagined as a small, elderly man (size varies from a few inches to about half the height of an adult man), often with a full beard; dressed in the everyday clothing of a farmer.

Approx. Size: 5" in height

He is packed in a small box and shipped via Canada Post. He comes complete with a card explaining the tomte mythology.
